Florida summers are known for two things: sunshine and sudden storms. If you’ve spent even a short time in the Sunshine State, you’ve likely experienced the switch from bright skies to torrential downpours, booming thunder, and lightning in a matter of minutes. While these storms can be beautiful to watch from the safety of your home, getting caught in one while driving can be a serious safety risk.

At Orange Buick GMC, your safety is our top priority. Here’s how you can stay safe on the road during Florida’s intense summer weather—and how we can help if your vehicle is impacted by a storm.

1. Slow Down and Turn On Your Headlights

When heavy rain hits, visibility can drop drastically. Reduce your speed and turn on your headlights (not your high beams) so you can see and be seen by others. Florida law requires headlights on when it's raining—it's not just smart, it's the law.

2. Avoid Standing Water

Flash floods can occur with little warning. Never drive through standing or fast-moving water. Just 6 inches of water can cause loss of control, and 12 inches can carry away most vehicles. If the road is flooded, turn around and find an alternate route. It’s not worth the risk.

3. Stay in Your Vehicle During Lightning

Florida is the lightning capital of the U.S. If lightning is striking nearby, stay in your car with the windows rolled up. Your vehicle’s metal frame can help direct the electrical current away from you in the event of a strike. Avoid touching metal parts or electronics while inside.

4. Pull Over Safely If Needed

If the rain is too heavy or you’re feeling unsafe, pull off the road as far as possible, ideally into a parking lot or rest area. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers. Stay inside until the storm passes.

5. Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle

A well-stocked emergency kit can help if you get stranded. Include items like a flashlight, first-aid kit, phone charger, poncho, drinking water, and non-perishable snacks. You’ll thank yourself later.
